Death sighed with relief when I sat up.I shook my head, trying to rid myself from my dizziness and gradually realised I was on a bed with crisp white sheets. I looked up and saw my brothers standing around me, and the sight of a doctor"s office.
War pointed to the sign above the door behind him. I groaned when I realised I was in the academy"s Nurse"s Office.
A sudden hit of resolve entered my mind. I had to find Small Cap. Death snapped when I abruptly sat up. I yelped at the sharp pain I felt at my head. When my pain eased, I felt something was wrong. My ears couldn"t stop ringing.
Keiran entered the room and stood by Death"s side. He looked at me with concern and his mouth was moving with words, but I couldn"t hear any sound from them.
The ringing stopped, so did the sound going into my ears. I had lost my hearing. My hands trembled as I raised them and signed my demise to my brothers.
Death slammed his hands over my ears and closed his eyes, to feel my situation. When they gradually opened, he realised the truth as a momentary deafness pa.s.sed through his own body due to his empathy skill.
"Famine has lost his hearing because the mind shield implanted within him has deteriorated. It"s all my fault," Death said aloud, which War translated for me in my mind.
_"Idiot Mother-brother! I can still speak with these."_ I signed, showed him my hands then signed. _"Plus, telepathy is still possible. So, don"t you go giving that pity me, I"m to blame s.h.i.t!"_
Death smiled weakly and nodded his head. He signed that we had to get onto repairing my mind shield straight away. Keiran offered a solution to that problem, which involved me attending cla.s.s.
"You leave the issues back at Academy Lane to us," he said, which War pa.s.sed on into my mind.
_"But! The Baleful Rider was there! Also, I need Small Cap! I need to..."_ I signed and cursed when my fingers decided to lock up with pins and needles.
_"Famisto. I"ll get dat critter for yah. Yah work on getting yar hearing back." War gently patted my shoulder then pushed back down to the bed. _"Rest."_
I screamed out my frustration, not knowing if my voice was loud or not. Why that memory? That power back at the Torii felt familiar and I did feel someone was there, watching. Small Cap might know something I don"t.
War peered at me keenly and signed. _"I can"t see into your mind any more."_
What?
He sighed and added that telepathy was no longer possible. It seems that the faulty mind shield was still breaking down.

Keiran whispered words to Death and War that made them nod. They gave me a final order to rest until the nurse returned. Someone would arrive to escort me to my cla.s.s.
The men left before I had a chance to finger my complaints.
