Ryuu gathered us closer in the center of the protective circle and had us sit down on the floor. Naturally, I sat in seiza that copped a chuckle from my brothers and nod of approval from Ryuu. The lesson continued through verbal discussion.
Now that we saw the truth of ourselves and our weaknesses (a principle I saw similar to Satori), we could start to strengthen on them, so they couldn"t be used against us.
Ryuu stipulated that this was important, since the principle of Semblance was mastery over the mind and body to produce a magical interference in a person. A skill not to be mistaken for Mushin.
The Mushin I was taught was being in a state of not thinking to draw upon my body"s knowledge and acute awareness of all life surrounding me. A lot of powerful magic could be called upon in this state once it was mastered, which is why I was able to summon the Power of Null on one occasion.
Semblance was different. Rather than draw outside energy into the body to cause a magical result, it solely relied on the resources within the body. The magical output resulted to telepathy, image casting, enchantments, soul trapping and binding.
Jace raised his hand with a question, which Ryuu granted him permission to speak.
"If semblance is magic to cause mental and bodily interference, why are there objects that can also cause this?" War opened up his mind to me, so I could hear Jace"s question first hand.
Ryuu smiled knowingly and pulled out a piece of paper from his pocket. He held it up for all of us to see.
"This is semblance magic. A totem with great power."
A heated whisper and weird looks were shared amongst the cla.s.s at the image of Trix in a dress uniform looking serious and proper.
"What the?" I mouthed.
"Why is this a powerful object?" Jace continued to ask.
"I look at it and it produces feelings, which starts to form an image. And, well, that image makes me want to take, ehem, some action." Ryuu sighed dreamingly and pocketed the photo.
"Creepy." I thought that made War stifle a chuckle and close his mind.
He then said a spell that called upon a blackboard made entirely of light in mid-air with his finger being the chalk. I was enthralled by his explanation, since it was easy to understand.
The brain was an organ and muscle that had a lot of pathways called synapses leading off into various chambers that were responsible for managing various functions of the body. The functions relied on messages made up of energy-potion-like things called neurotransmitters that moved about the synapses. These pretty much made up our intelligence, individuality and will. I was beginning to see why my wonky mind shield was able to affect my hearing more keenly now.
"When we feel something. That feeling triggers these little busy bodies into working to form an image. This image then creates newer and a more complex arrangement of feelings, images that result into either a voluntary or involuntary body reaction. Semblance magic goes that one step further to also bind mana to the cast imagery, evoking a magical result. On some occasions, deadly or damaging." Ryuu smugly lectured the cla.s.s, looking chuffed at the many "oohs" and eyes staring back at him with awe.
"Wow! You"re smarter than Ryoko. I didn"t expect that." I blurted with my hands and yelped at a stinging zap to my wrist from Ryuu"s finger.
"Kid." I mouthed, rubbing my wrist better. I caught glances from a couple of guys my age, which weren"t welcoming.
