Later that afternoon, Moganshan "Did Chu and Ethan reach before you left Jia Li"s house?" Tang asked Wei at the Police station"s entrance.
"Yes, they did. And no, I didn"t tell her that I was coming here. I told her that I had to go to the inst.i.tute for a bit. I am not slow or stupid," Wei replied irritated.
Tang grinned unexpectedly and clapped on his shoulder.
"Only fifteen minutes, and that also on the special permission of the chief. No threatening, no abuse, else you would be asked to leave immediately," the officer warned the two men.
Tang put up a solemn face in front of the officer and said, "we would follow your instructions. Thank you for allowing this."
"Well, you need to thank whoever pulled the strings for you. Anyways, his case is going to be s.h.i.+fted to Shanghai soon," the officer said wryly.
Both men wore neutral expressions when they entered the cabin where Fu was already sitting, cuffed.
"Where is Jia Li? Don"t I get to see her lovely face today?" Fu goaded Tang, the minute he saw him.
Wei held onto Tang"s arm but the latter shrugged his hand off.
"You can forget catching Jia Li"s shadow also, ever in your life again," Tang said in a polite, almost courteous tone.
"So I am not here to dissect what happened yesterday but to ask you only one question. It is not a tough one. In fact, it may help in making your sentence a bit lighter," he continued in a soothing tone.
When no reaction was forthcoming from Fu"s end, Tang continued in the same vein, unperturbed.
"Did you have an accomplice in this plan?" he asked bluntly.
Fu c.o.c.ked his head on one side and studied Tang for a minute before replying, "it seems that you are hoping for an answer which may hold the key to your freedom, rather than mine. Sorry to disappoint you but I had no accomplice. I acted alone."
Fu smirked at the annoyance which flitted across Tang"s face, momentarily.
"For your sake, I sincerely hope that you serve a long sentence. Else, I can"t guarantee your well-being upon getting released," it was Wei who addressed him finally.
"And who might you be? I don"t recall crossing paths with you ever," Fu asked him curiously.
"My ident.i.ty is not important. What is important is for you to worry about your safety. You do not know me but you will surely see me the day you step out of the confines of the jail, whenever that maybe," Wei told him, cold intent in his eyes.
The officer came inside and interrupted them. He asked them to leave. Since there was nothing forthcoming from Fu, the men didn"t resist.
"Do you believe his words?" Wei asked Tang, once they were outside the station.
"What do you think?" Tang turned the question back at him.
Wei chose his next words carefully.
"I don"t know for sure but even if what you suspect is true, I can understand the person"s insecurity behind it. I am not saying it was the right thing to do. In fact, I may never end up speaking with her civilly ever again for all the hurt and trauma Jia Li went through. But, in your case, some of the blame may lay at your door for having reduced the person to this state. If I were you, I would give my future a clear thought before I take the next step. And while we are on the topic, I want to make something crystal clear to you. I intend to use my FULL might to pursue Jia Li. It has been my mistake to have held back all this while, now no more. I am going to take complete responsibility for her. So, you need to stop worrying about her welfare and start concentrating on your internal family affairs instead," he said, matter-of fact.
"And who told you that my internal affairs exclude Jia Li? You have extended the courtesy of informing me about your intensions, so I shall do the same. Jia Li was, is, and will always be mine. So, the dreams that you are weaving, well... will end up being just that. Before you remind me, YES, I am aware that I am married, but not for long. So, you better tread carefully. My advice would be to focus your attention somewhere else to save yourself some heartache," he thundered in return.
Wei stared hard at him, "you plan on getting a divorce? Does Mei Zhen even have a clue about it? Because her actions indicate that she intends to hold onto you and this marriage."
"Like you said, it is my internal matter and I will sort it out at my end. Let"s go home now. Jia Li would be waiting," Tang turned to go.
