The arrival of the Jingzhao Office interrupted the opera performance, which had just reached its climax.
The guests were full of complaints, but since the officials from the Jingzhao Office came with official doc.u.ments and legitimate reasons, not even someone of Ming Junw.a.n.g’s status dared to openly demand they leave.
Ming Junw.a.n.g sat in a private room on the first floor, looking displeased. “What’s going on? Why are the people from the Jingzhao Office here? Could it be they’ve noticed my movements?”
His trusted bodyguard said, "They shouldn’t have; we"ve been very cautious. Besides, we haven’t done anything wrong that would warrant the Jingzhao Office"s intervention."
“That’s right. This prince is only here to wait for someone…”
It was just that the timing wasn’t ideal.
The Han Family had just experienced a major incident, and here he was handling business in an opera house. Who would believe that?
People would probably think he was here for pleasure.
Ming Junw.a.n.g was troubled, “Will the person Imperial Father mentioned really show up? But why have we waited so long without any news?”
The trusted bodyguard suggested, “How about… this subordinate escort Junw.a.n.g out first? Junw.a.n.g can return once the people from Jingzhao Office are gone.”
Ming Junw.a.n.g frowned, "What if that person arrives while this prince is gone?"
The trusted bodyguard replied, "If he arrives, there"s no need to worry. The Jingzhao Office is checking people at Tianxiang Pavilion, so they won"t be able to get in. This subordinate will keep an eye from across the street, and if this subordinate does see someone suspicious, I"ll go make contact with him."
Ming Junw.a.n.g felt a bit tempted but hesitated and ultimately shook his head, "Imperial Father has repeatedly emphasized the importance of this matter. That person is a rare expert, and this prince must personally bring him back to the Crown Prince Estate. This prince can"t let him fall into the hands of other forces... Never mind, this prince won’t go far. If he comes, you’ll notify this prince."
“Yes, Your Highness!”
The trusted bodyguard opened the door cautiously, listening to the commotion outside.
The people from Jingzhao Office were inspecting each guest, likely checking whether anyone was disguised.
They were checking both men and women.
How strange.
Ming Junw.a.n.g, lacking experience in counter-surveillance, hadn’t thought to disguise himself with a mask or a hat. He could only lower his presence as much as possible and attempt to leave through the back door.
However, just as he reached the backyard, a squad of soldiers stormed in through the back door as well.
Ming Junw.a.n.g"s expression changed, and he hurried back into a tea room in the main hall.
“What’s going on? Why are even the people from the Commandery Office here?”
Ming Junw.a.n.g clenched his fist in frustration.
The Commandery Office was a military office that operated directly under the Emperor and held the command authority over the troops of Great Yan. Its officials could be rea.s.signed without going through the cabinet, as the Emperor appointed them directly.
The Commandery Office didn’t exist in the previous dynasty. It was established by the current Emperor of the State of Yan to strengthen his absolute authority in the court.
The overall commander of the Commandery Office was w.a.n.g Ren, the younger brother of Virtuous Imperial Consort w.a.n.g, and the one leading today was w.a.n.g Ren’s legitimate son, w.a.n.g Xu.
w.a.n.g Xu held the rank of Guardian Commandant in the Commandery Office and was primarily responsible for overseeing people’s movements in Shengdu.
w.a.n.g Xu, mounted on his horse, commanded the two groups of officers around him, saying, "You all, guard the entrance. Not a single fly is allowed to escape! You lot, come with me and search inside!"
Another search?
Who exactly were they looking for?
When the Jingzhao Office arrived, Ming Junw.a.n.g was still somewhat uncertain about whose orders they were following, but with the Commandery Office involved, it was clear that his Imperial Grandfather was looking for someone.
Ming Junw.a.n.g suddenly remembered something.
w.a.n.g Xu had been a.s.signed to guard the imperial mausoleum a few years ago, and it was said that he had even taught martial arts to the Eldest Imperial Grandson at the mausoleum.
Only, the Eldest Imperial Grandson was an utterly incompetent person who couldn’t learn anything.
“Junw.a.n.g, there’s a cellar here!” The trusted bodyguard discovered a secret cellar in the tea room.
Ming Junw.a.n.g’s eyes lit up, and he quickly hid in the cellar with his trusted bodyguard.
......
After coming downstairs, Gu Jiao went to the part.i.tioned area where the students of Tianqiong Academy were.
Yuan Xiao hurriedly asked, “Liulang! Where did you go? You’ve been gone so long! I looked everywhere for you and couldn’t find you!”
Gu Jiao replied without changing her expression, “Oh, I went to the latrine.”
Zhao Wei asked, “Did you get stuck in the latrine or something?”
The performance had already reached its halfway point!
“Liulang.” Gu Xiaoshun pulled out a chair, gesturing for Gu Jiao to sit.
He knew Gu Jiao had gone to find Gu Chengfeng, but he was puzzled as to why Gu Chengfeng was performing on stage, nor why his sister had been gone for so long.
Gu Jiao sat next to Gu Xiaoshun and took out a flamboyant peac.o.c.k mask from her chest, putting it on.
Everyone was nearly blinded by her sudden move.
"What are you doing?" Yuan Xiao looked at her as if she were mentally challenged.
Gu Jiao responded seriously, “I’m worried they might be blinded by my beauty.”
Yuan Xiao: “…”
Everyone else: “…”
Gu Xiaoshun leaned in close to Gu Jiao’s ear and whispered at a volume only the two of them could hear, "Who are they looking for, big sis? It wouldn’t be Gu Chengfeng, would it?"
Gu Jiao glanced at the group of officers entering from the front and then at the second group of officers pouring in through the back door.
She wasn’t familiar with State of Yan’s official uniforms and couldn’t tell that the second group belonged to the Commandery Office.
But judging from their presence and demeanor, their status was no lower than that of the Jingzhao Office.
"It shouldn’t be." She replied quietly.
Gu Chengfeng was just an escaped slave from the Han Family’s mines. If someone were chasing him, it would be private officers from the mines, not two such powerful forces.
Before long, the officers from Jingzhao Office reached the area of Tianqiong Academy.
Gu Xiaoshun was the first to be inspected, and surprisingly, there was a female officer in this group.
She didn’t seem like a real officer, more like an ordinary woman dressed in officer’s uniform.
The female officer pinched Gu Xiaoshun"s face, seemingly checking if he was wearing a human skin mask. Then she pressed on Gu Xiaoshun"s chest, leaving him bewildered, "What are you doing?!"
The female officer shook her head at the other Jingzhao Office officers.
Gu Jiao understood.
They were looking for a woman.Raz P."s Thoughts

Description:
In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the Shi family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succ.u.mb to darkness amidst hardship and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.
When Shi Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the Shi family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.
The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.
From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.
***
Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like Shi Dai.
After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"
Shi Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
—
After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"
Shi Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
—
Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don"t abandon me, alri—”
Shi Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
He hasn"t finished his lines yet though…
