It took An Xiaxia a little while to realize something was off.
On any other normal day, Sheng Yize would have charged at her by now, but where was he today?
She patted her own head. “An Xiaxia, are you m.a.s.o.c.h.i.s.tic? It’s better now that he’s not coming after you! Hmph!”
An Xiaxia walked a few more steps before hesitating.
He said he didn’t feel well… What if it was something serious…
No, no, he had to be lying to her! He was probably snickering in his car at that moment and would only laugh at her when she ran all the way back…
However —
Biting her lip, she still trotted back.
She was terrified as soon as she opened the car door.
“Sheng Yize! Hey! Wake up!” She called his name, but Sheng Yize only lay still with his eyes closed.
He wasn’t faking it.
He had really pa.s.sed out.
An Xiaxia didn’t dare dally and called his driver right away.
The driver arrived in a hurry. Taking the wheel, he floored the gas pedal, heading for the hospital at top speed.
“Faster!” An Xiaxia prompted.
The driver sighed. “Young Master has always been this stubborn! His stomach problem comes back every year and it’s getting quite serious, but he just won’t take good care of himself…”
An Xiaxia felt terrible. He had remembered her petty rhinitis and wouldn’t smoke when she was around.
However, he had forgotten to take care of himself.
There was a throbbing pain in her chest and as she gazed at Sheng Yize’s chiseled face, tears rolled down her cheeks.
“Get well, dummy. I’m not mad at you anymore. You don’t have to tell the truth if you don’t want to.”
–
The hospital.
An Xiaxia waited anxiously for the test results.
The attending physician recognized her from before and teased her, “Your husband will be so moved to see how much you care about him once he wakes up.”
An Xiaxia tugged at the lower hem of her clothes in self-reproach.
If she had really cared about Sheng Yize like the doctor said, she should have realized his health problem a long time ago.
He hadn’t been feeling well since being out in the rain the other day, had he? She couldn’t imagine how he could have endured it for so long.
It wasn’t that he was good at covering up. At the end of the day, she simply didn’t pay enough attention to his well being.
“I’ll go get him something to eat.” An Xiaxia rose to her feet and walked out of the hospital.
She found a porridge shop, where she bought some mild millet congee, steamed buns, and a couple of appetizing side dishes. She then headed back to the hospital with all the food.
A crowd had gathered under the hospital building and everyone was engaged in animated conversation as they pointed at a figure up on the rooftop.
“Why, is she going to jump or not? We’ve been waiting for ages!”
An Xiaxia looked up and her face went pale.
A frail, slender figure sat motionless on the edge of the rooftop.
Two women walked past An Xiaxia at that moment and one of them said in a mean voice, “She’s just trying to get noticed, if you ask me! She’s not going to jump! I went up there and took a photo just then. The woman just sat there the entire time. People nowadays will do anything to get famous!”
An Xiaxia darted her a curious look and recognized the face on her iPad.
Gos.h.!.+
An Xiaxia hurried into the hospital building and took a lift to the rooftop.
The autumn wind blew yellow leaves off the branches, covering the city streets. Mu Li sat there on the edge of the roof and gazed at everything beneath her with an impa.s.sive face.
Why was it that some people were exhausted by life, while others could live the perfect life they wanted?
Behind her, social workers and firemen were trying to talk some sense into her, but she ignored them all.
A sweet voice called her name. “Mu Li!”
Looking over her shoulder with rigid movements, Mu Li seemed to wake up a little when she recognized An Xiaxia.
