Chapter 74: Jiang Xuecheng’s Childhood
It seemed she had overthought.
Su Wan touched her nose and thought she was too much to suspect Jiang Xuecheng without reason. Hence, she gave in.
“It’s my mistake, I’m sorry.”
Jiang Xuecheng put all his attention on Su Wan. He looked down and raised his brows. His lips curved up slightly with a different kind of smile.
“You’re not wrong. I’m happy you’re jealous for my sake.”
Su Wan raised her beautiful brows and rolled her eyes. “Stop being narcissistic. I just don’t want to be kept in the dark.”
Jiang Xuecheng looked at Su Wan deeply. His unpredictable look seemed to have a piercing ability. There was a faint smile on his face with unhidden teasing.
“Wan Wan, you still say what you don’t mean.”
Su Wan glared at Jiang Xuecheng sulkily. She hugged that thick photo alb.u.m back into Jiang Xuecheng’s room. Very quickly, Jiang Xuecheng caught up with her pace.
The knot in Su Wan’s heart had been untangled. Now, she was interested to know more about Jiang Xuecheng’s brother, Jiang Haoxuan, and Sheng An’ning, who grew up with the two brothers.
Jiang Xuecheng only replied with one sentence. “Jiang Haoxuan follows Sheng An’ning everywhere she goes.” It was difficult for Su Wan to ask further.
Since Jiang Xuecheng didn’t want to talk about the two people, she changed the topic, hoping to clear her doubts.
“Xuecheng, why do your family members seem to be afraid of you? Perhaps not really afraid, but their att.i.tudes are weird. They seem to always do as you tell them to…”
Jiang Xuecheng smiled faintly. He stretched out his hand to caress Su Wan’s hair and he sighed lowly.
“I remember telling you I was not very healthy when I was young?”
Su Wan leaned against Jiang Xuecheng and paid attention to what he was saying. Then, she nodded her head.
Jiang Xuecheng flipped one strand of Su Wan’s hair. His eyes deepened and he said, “When I was born, I was told I had no heartbeat and breath. The doctor decided I was a dead baby.”
“Ah!”
Su Wan was stunned and subconsciously trembled. Then, she widened her eyes and couldn’t help but caress Jiang Xuecheng’s cheeks.
This man was good looking. His brows were tidy, his nose was straight and his thin lips had clear lines that showed his ruthlessness. That pair of eyes curved up slightly and were amazingly beautiful. He was flawless.
How could such a man bestowed by G.o.d be a dead baby?
“Don’t you believe me, Wan Wan?”
Jiang Xuecheng lowered his head to look at Su Wan’s expression. As expected, he found deep disbelief in Su Wan’s eyes.
Su Wan felt suffocated being stared at by such indifferent eyes. She caught hold of Jiang Xuecheng’s hand.
This man’s hand was not as cold as his eyes. There was human’s warmth, bringing Su Wan’s mind back from a blank state to having thoughts.
Su Wan pursed her lips and started to explain. “I just feel…it sounds beyond comprehension.”
She had never believed in spiritual beings and had not experienced such fantasy but all this weren’t the most important.
“Xuecheng, it’s sufficient that you can sit intact in front of me now.”
Being held tightly by Su Wan, gentleness appeared in Jiang Xuecheng’s cold eyes. Then, that gentleness disappeared and calmness took over as he continued talking about his past.
“That time, my mother was reluctant to give up on me. She kept watch over me for several days and finally, I had a heartbeat. The first few years, my parents must have lived in fear, worried that I’d die anytime. Three years later, my parents had my little brother.”
Jiang Xuecheng then snapped his fingers. The emotions at the bottom of his eyes were dark and obscure. “They agreed to adopt Sheng An’ning, perhaps afraid I’d be lonely and they thought another child my age could accompany me so I wouldn’t feel bored.”
“When I was young, I couldn’t go out often. I kept imagining how the world outside the Jiang family’s old house would look like. To me, this place does not have good memories.”
Su Wan’s heart palpitated. She had never thought that Jiang Xuecheng’s childhood would be so dark.
Because of his poor health, the Jiang family wished they could watch over him all the time. As a result, Jiang Xuecheng grew up with an isolated character.
Compared to his childhood, her childhood was much happier. Su Wan’s parents doted on her since young and she was not constrained by too many rules.
Su Wan felt dull within and the corners of her eyes were slightly wet. Seized by a sudden impulse, she raised her hand to cover Jiang Xuecheng’s mouth.
“Xuecheng, don’t say anymore. I shouldn’t have made you recall these things.”
Jiang Xuecheng s.h.i.+fted Su Wan’s hand. His eyes were fixed on Su Wan. His indifferent voice turned gentler.
“Wan Wan, please don’t leave me. Promise me you’ll always accompany me.”
Su Wan took a deep breath. She took the initiative to hug Jiang Xuecheng. Her shoulders unconsciously trembled.
“Of course, we are husband and wife. We will always be together now and in the future.”
He understood Su Wan’s nimble answer, and Jiang Xuecheng was touched. Just as he was about to do something, the door was opened.
Both Su Wan and Jiang Xuecheng were stunned and they looked at the door at the same time.
The person standing at the door was Jiang Xuecheng’s mother, Xu Ziyao. Her beautiful eyes widened, as if surprised by the sight in front of her.
Xu Ziyao coughed lightly and then said to Jiang Xuecheng and Su Wan, “Xuecheng, you two were…Grandmother is asking you to go down.”
Jiang Xuecheng saw redness on Su Wan’s cheeks. Su Wan stood up immediately and stood a distant away from him.
It was so embarra.s.sing!
She had wanted to increase Jiang Xuecheng’s mother’s liking toward her. Now, she was afraid her image had been destroyed completely!
If she were to know Xu Ziyao would come in suddenly, she wouldn’t have taken the initiative to hug Jiang Xuecheng!
Now, it was too late to regret!
In her heart, she wiped away the bitter tears but had to pretend nothing had happened on the outside. She followed Jiang Xuecheng downstairs calmly.
When they were downstairs, Luo Xiuxiu wasn’t the only one waiting in the living hall. She was surrounded by Jiang Zhiyuan, Jiang Wei, and a few servants.
When Luo Xiuxiu saw Su Wan and Jiang Xuecheng, she smiled energetically. She went up to them and pointed to some things in the living hall.
“Xuecheng, Wan, these are some gifts I’ve prepared for both of you. Both of you are newlyweds. If I don’t give you any presents, people will think I’m unkind towards the daughter-in-law of the Jiang family.”
G.o.d, this was…
Luo Xiuxiu had given her an emerald bangle. Xu Ziyao had also given her a big red packet with a huge amount.
When Su Wan was about to say something, Jiang Xuecheng hinted her with his look and stopped her from saying. Jiang Xuecheng walked up to his grandmother and said in a deep voice, “Alright, Grandmother, we don’t lack these things.”
Luo Xiuxiu glared at Jiang Xuecheng. “How do you know that your wife doesn’t need these? I’m happy to give.”
