“You should be going back.”
The voice seemed far away and he couldn’t make out if it was a male or a female voice. The person who spoke was persistent and he or she kept repeating the same sentence which hit hard on Jiang Xuecheng’s heart.
Jiang Xuecheng’s brows were tightly knitted. He hated being controlled by someone.
His lips were trembling and he clenched his fists. With all his might, he shouted, “No!”
Instantly, the darkness disappeared and the evil b.l.o.o.d.y moon vanished.
It was then replaced by white fog. Jiang Xuecheng carefully walked forward and found that he had become short and small. He was being pushed and shoved around by what seemed to be gigantic doctors wearing white robes.
The surrounding air was cold and smelled of disinfectant.
Jiang Xuecheng detested this smell and hated feeling even weaker. Cold sweat continuously dripped from his forehead and with his thin and weak legs, he staggered toward the door…
The group of doctors wearing white robes saw what he was trying to do and warned him with their looks and then, with a bang, they closed the door of the ward.
When the voice said, “You should be going back,” did it mean he should go back to his dark childhood?
Back to that life surrounded by the smell of disinfectant?
Jiang Xuecheng despised his younger self because he was too young to resist and had to allow the red and green tubes to be p.r.i.c.ked into his body.
The red blood, the cold walls, and the silent doctors…
They looked at him without a word but their eyes were full of sympathy, as if using their gazes to whisper to one another, “Poor thing, this child can’t be saved.”
Jiang Xuecheng was panting fast and his temples were twitching. He cursed lowly and swore to escape from that sickly life.
He tried his best to open his eyes but his eyelids were heavy, like something was weighing him down, not allowing him to wake up…
Suddenly, he heard a familiar female voice beside his ear. The voice was gentle, forgiving and loving.
She said, “Xuecheng, wake up, you can’t go anywhere. You can only stay here with me.”
She said she was Wan Wan…
He thought of the name and instantly, a small flame lit up at the bottom of his heart. He struggled with all his might to resist the dream that was engulfing him.
Su Wan hugged Jiang Xuecheng and realized his body had started trembling. Su Wan didn’t know what to do so she hugged him tighter.
She called his name and waited for him to wake up.
Su Wan had experienced nightmares many years ago when her parents died. So, when she found out that Jiang Xuecheng was having a nightmare, her heart ached.
Another flash of lightning shot through the night sky.
Su Wan was blinded by that light which was unpleasant to look at. When she looked back, the man in her embrace had woken up.
He was not frowning anymore and his look was placid. His dark eyes were amazingly bright. His dark eyes fixed on Su Wan, just like a beast ready to attack.
At that moment, Su Wan noticed Jiang Xuecheng looked strange but she relaxed at the fact that he had woken up from his nightmare.
She put her head on his shoulder joyfully and her tears turned into smiles.
“You’re finally awake! I was worried for so long.”
Jiang Xuecheng slowly turned to look at her. Her eyes shone with gentle care for him. He calmed down slowly and his initial hostility had disappeared. Only deep love remained in his dark eyes.
“I’m sorry, it won’t happen again.”
His gentle voice rang beside her ears.
This was Su Wan’s first time hearing Jiang Xuecheng’s gentle and apologetic tone. As a person who placed importance in voices, she blushed and she tried to cover her discomfort with her teasing.
“It’s good that you know. You’re a big man and you have nightmares when you hear thunder? If your admirers were to know the renowned young master of Jiuzhou is one who’s afraid of the thunder, their hearts would be broken.”
Jiang Xuecheng smiled faintly. In the past, he would never have nightmares during thunderstorms. Although he knew Su Wan was joking, he raised his head to look at the downpour outside the window. He secretly felt uncertain.
Thunder in April was rare for S City and the weather forecast had not predicted rain today. Today’s weather was a little unusual.
Jiang Xuecheng s.h.i.+fted his vision back to Su Wan. He flipped the hair on the side of her cheeks and asked, “What does what they think have to do with me?”
Su Wan sneered. She had gotten along with Jiang Xuecheng for a long time and understood that uttering arrogant words was his style.
She stopped teasing. “Today’s wind is strong. The windows in our bathroom have broken. Should we get someone to repair it tomorrow?”
Jiang Xuecheng glanced at Su Wan. His low and magnetic voice brought about his manly warm breath, brus.h.i.+ng Su Wan’s face.
“This is a small matter. I’ll handle it. Tomorrow morning, you tidy yourself and I’ll pick an evening gown for you.”
Su Wan was slightly surprised. “You’re bringing me out?”
“Tomorrow is S City’s tender meeting, have you forgotten?”
Jiang Xuecheng smiled and stretched out his hand, his long finger twirling Su Wan’s hair.
Su Wan was stupefied. The tender meeting was a serious occasion, why should he pick an evening gown for her?
“You…”
Jiang Xuecheng shook his head while smiling. His deep eyes fell on Su Wan and he said, “Don’t you know the leader of S City has said to use all the money from Beitong’s bidding for charity?”
After hearing Jiang Xuecheng’s explanation, Su Wan was suddenly enlightened.
A charity dinner would be held before the tender meeting at the International Exhibition Center in S City. Su Wan had not expected to attend the dinner.
She had never liked high-end social circles of the rich. Even under the name of a charity dinner, it would merely be a display of ostentatious lifestyles.
There was a constraint in her face. “Could I not go?”
This was the first time Jiang Xuecheng saw Su Wan having stage fright. He stretched his finger out to tap Su Wan’s nose. His voice was faint but firm, not allowing any resistance.
“You’re the female partner I’ve personally picked. Do you think you can decline?”
Su Wan frowned slightly, troubled. She was Jiang Xuecheng’s wife but this time, she had to accompany her husband to the charity dinner under the name of his subordinate.
When she pictured the image of Jiang Xuecheng in others’ eyes as a fine, rich, bachelor who had never brought female partner when attending occasions like this, Su Wan’s heart felt cold.
“Alright, alright, I’ll do as you wish.”
Su Wan switched off the wall lamp and pulled over her blanket, ready to sleep. However, she was brought into Jiang Xuecheng’s embrace.
