Malika.

December 16, 2008.

"—That"s it!" Malika said surprisingly.

"I couldn"t wait for two weeks," Adam said proudly.

"Right… so you just randomly proposed," Malika said and looked at the ocean thinking why Farah would react that way, on the other side Adam was still talking but Malika wasn"t paying any attention to him. "I"ve to go, bye." she hung up the phone without waiting for his response.

She didn"t like Adam; he seemed over the top and arrogant. She never thought he would propose to Farah, she never saw him as marriage material. She knew why Farah reacted this way yet there was nothing else to do but wait for Farah to confirm it herself.

Two hours later.

Malika was sitting on the balcony chair drinking coffee after she finished eating lunch. She heard the suite door closed and then a slammed noise on one of the beds. She looked back and saw Farah laying on her stomach. "How was the meeting?" she asked loudly.

"Long and boring," Farah said weakly.

Malika went inside and sat next to Farah. "Tell me, what happened to you?"

"He talked a lot, he wants to make a huge construction and so many designs, I don"t have the energy to do," Farah said and moved her body to face Malika.

"I"m not asking about the meeting; I meant Adam."

"He told you already," Farah said and sighed.

"Yeah, why didn"t you tell me?"

"We didn"t have much time to talk," Farah said and shrugged.

"Really? We were on the plane for almost a day, we had plenty of time," Malika argued.

"Well…you slept most of it," she said, reaching for her bag on the floor next to the bed and got the ring box from it. "I don"t know, I never thought about it," Farah said and sat on the other bed facing Malika.

"You never thought of marrying him or marriage in general?... You love him, right?"

Farah took a deep breath and looked at the ocean. "Yeah, I love him."

"You don"t sound convincing," Malika said and then took the box from her hand and opened it. "He clearly doesn"t know you," Malika sneered. Farah frowned not understanding what she meant. "The ring wait… you didn"t open it?" Malika said surprisingly. Farah shook her head. "You weren"t a bit curious?! look." Malika handed the box to her; it was a cla.s.sic diamond engagement ring in a yellow gold band and 1.5 carats diamond.

"I don"t wear yellow gold or even gold in general," Farah said, holding looking at the box in disgust.

"Exactly," Malika said, pointing at the ring. "So… what"s your answer?"

"I don"t know."

"Do you want my opinion? I think—"

"I didn"t ask for it," Farah said deadpan.

"—rude." Farah smiled softly. "I think you should break up with him." Farah frowned. "I know you"re not in love with him," Malika said firmly.

"I love him!"

"I said in love, I didn"t say you hate the guy, I mean it"s not a pa.s.sionate love," Malika said.

"You"re wrong, what gives you this weird idea?" Farah said and stood up.

"You know what gave me this weird idea," Malika said, and air quoted.

"No, I don"t."

"You"re joking, right?... You really don"t know?" Malika said and stood up too.

"Know what?" Farah looked plainly confused.

"Noah."

"What does Noah have to do with anything?" Farah said more confused.

Malika"s phone ranged suddenly; this time was Noah. "Speaking of the devil… or in this case a handsome devil," Malika said before answering the call gaining a grumpy look from Farah. "Here"s the birthday boy," Malika said, laughing.

"Hey, where are you mate?" Noah asked.

"In the hotel, Farah just finished her meeting, tell me where the party is?"

"There is no party, we"re going to hang out at my place and Ethan will cook," Noah said.

"Who?" Malika asked.

"Ethan, my oldest friend."

"Doesn"t ring any bell."

"I"m sure I told you about him before."

"No, it"s probably Farah," Malika said and smiled at her.

"What?" Farah said suspiciously.

"Nothing," Malika whispered.

"Maybe anyways Mal, don"t be late and tell Farah to check her phone, I texted her the address."

"Don"t worry, we won"t." Malika hung up the phone and looked at Farah without blinking. "You tell me… what does Noah have to do with anything?" Malika said in a modulated voice.

"Nothing Malika! I love Adam, that"s that," Farah said firmly with clear confusion in her eyes.

"Okay if you say so," Malika said, shrugging her shoulders.
