Author"s Footnote: Both the Dragon"s Throat and the gripping mudflats (alluvial mud) are actual features that have been found in arctic regions. During the peak of one past jokulhlaup, as it is known, at Lake George, as much as 150 million gallons of water drained from the 25 square mile lake each minute. Every year, people are caught in the alluvial mud in Cook Inlet. Some are not rescued in time and eventually must be abandoned as the frigid water closes over them.
