"What is it you needed me for?" Zylvia grinned at her husband as they entered their bedroom. He gestured for her to sit on the bed as he picked up something wrapped in cloth, "Some complicated magic…stuff I can"t do by myself. I figured I might as well make you my helper for this, you might learn something." He sat beside of her with a smile on his face.
"If it is complicated, then shouldn"t you have more people?" She tilted her head as she scooted closer to him.
"Well, you need one person to act as a focus, and another for guiding… so technically you only need two. Normally, more people would be used as it requires a lot of magic, but…." He glanced at her with a smirk on his face, "You have so more magic than most, and I know a few shortcuts so I think we"ll be fine."
"You think!?" She quirked an eyebrow at him, "My dear sorcerer, if you"re wrong the consequences would be dire!"
He winked at her, "That is why you have someone working as a focus. If you need to pull out then you can. This is not that risky of magic, usually. But if it does become risky it is the sort of risk that is usually better the fewer people you have. We should try it with just the two of us first."
"Alright…" If he thought they could do it then okay, "So what are we doing?"
"Scrying." Kaldrek sighed, "Not something I normally do, so I may be a little rusty. And we may not get anything. But I thought that I should try at least."
"Are we looking for the people who attacked Fayre?"
"Yes."
"Let"s do this then." Zylvia felt more than ready. She did not like the fact that Fayre had come close to death. If she could do anything to help then she would do so quite happily.
"Alright, love. But first I should run you through it a little." He smiled at her as he unwrapped the item he was holding. It was round and made of crystal. She had heard of crystal b.a.l.l.s before but was not fully aware of how much she had heard was true. "So, Zylv, this should make it a little easier, one of the reasons I am willing to just have the two of us do this alone. Crystal b.a.l.l.s make it easier to start and finish. They allow you to capture a moment."
He paused for a second as he showed her how to place her hands on it, cupping his own over hers so his fingertips rested against it. "Now I think it would be better if you take the focus as you are not as experienced in magic as I am and it is the easier job. All you have to do is keep an eye on both of our magic levels, and make sure we do not overextend. If we start to, get my attention, and pull us out."
Noticing the nervous look on her face he a.s.sured her, "It is not hard. Our magic will merge together and you"ll be able to sense it. Getting my attention would be easy as well, you don"t need to worry. Oh, and you"ll also be able to see what I am doing and it should help you learn how magic works. That is something such magic is useful for – it makes really good practice."
"What are the risks you talked about being a possibility?" She fidgeted a little.
"Well, I don"t think it will be a problem, but if we accidentally scry on someone who notices such things and they retaliate, or if we run into a trap triggered by somebody scrying, it may be difficult to deal with." He pursed his lips., "If I tell you to pull your mind away do so. As the focus you won"t be in as much risk as me."
When he noticed the look on her face he smiled and leaned over to place a kiss on her forehead, "Don"t worry. I am strong enough that the traps don"t worry me too much and unless someone is stronger than me mentally, I should be able to deal with them."
Zylvia relaxed hearing this. She figured he knew what he was doing. He was the expert here. She was just glad to be able to help him out.
He continued giving her some instructions and made sure she was as prepared as she would be before he started the spell. She felt it as their magic merged and to a certain extent their minds as well.
She had always wanted to see her husband"s mind and now she could – at least the surface thoughts and some impressions of what lay deeper down. Enough to know that he was a complicated person. But she could sense his love for her and it surprised her just how much it was woven into his very being.
She pulled her focus to his magic. It was different than hers. Wild, yet restrained. Focused and she realized that while he had a smaller manna pool than hers it was still a rather large one. His bloodline seemed to go in two directions at once yet pulled together seamlessly.
She mixed her magic with his and fed it to him as he began to use it to search. She could see the flash of images as he swiftly began to scry.
And then he was pulled up short as they hit one of those "threats" that Kaldrek had mentioned earlier.
