Training was as tough as it had always been. The duo carried their tired bodies home with Kim threatening to give up as easily as she started. While Carl reminded her of her promise to improve her physical strength. It was like any other day until Carl received a call from an unknown number, "Outside, now." A gruff voice drifted through the phone before the line went dead. Carl who had figured out that it was Chamberlain, opted to ignore the call. He did not have to take instructions from anyone who wasn"t related to him. Why should he listen to his command? Besides he did not want to see him.
He put down the phone, to continue his board game with Kim. "You moved your game when I wasn"t watching," he shouted.
"Did not!"
Glaring at her, he moved her game to its original position, "It was here."Find authorized novels in Webnovel, faster updates, better experience,Please click for visiting.
"No, it wasn"t," she argued, moving the game to her intended position. "You shouldn"t turn your eyes from the game then accuse me of cheating," Being scolded by Kim when she was in the wrong made him wonder about life. People really do throw the blame on others. While he was contemplating his next move, his phone rang again.
"What?!" He snapped.
"Don"t force my hand," the gruff voice warned before cutting the line again.
He took a glimpse of Kim before excusing himself, "I"ll be right back. Don"t think about moving anything, else you"ll be in charge of cleaning too."
…
Chamberlain sized Carl up once he saw him come out of the elevator, "I thought you wouldn"t come out."
"And why am I here?" He casually asked in reply.
"I can"t possibly wait for you to weigh the pros and cons of working for me…"
Carl quickly interrupted, "I never considered that, I"m not interested."
Chamberlain gave him a warning glare before he continued, "I"ve come to make it easier for you, you either go back to work and wait for further instructions or we could do this the hard way. I"m fine with whichever you choose. But the hard way may incur collateral damage."
At the mention of collateral damage, Carl was visibly shaken as his mind wandered to Kim, who was busy rearranging the board game. His complexion paled in contrast with Chamberlain who was looking as fine as he could be.
As he spoke, some men in black suits made their way towards him whilst the others headed for the elevator. It was obvious he was referring to Kim.
"Stop!." Carl uttered. But they ignored his command as they continued forward. Realising he wasn"t joking, he made to accept his demand, "I"ll return to work," he pleaded.
Afterwhich Chamberlain smiled, gesturing to his men to stop. Moving forward, he dusted the non-existent dirt off Carl"s shoulders, "We shouldn"t make things difficult for us, right? Acting tough isn"t going to help when you"re powerless. I don"t enjoy nagging, but you make me talk a lot Stallone, you should just listen to me, then everything, everyone will be fine."
"What will I be doing?"
"You don"t have to worry, just show up on Monday morning, you"ll find out."
What Carl was uncertain of was the said work. Considering the Stans were a political family, he concluded it was nothing good. Either money laundering or some other untoward act to further their cause. He did not want to be a part of any crime or even politics. He just wanted to enjoy his life, especially since he was no longer living under his father.
He never expected he would attract the likes of the Stans and get Kim involved. Squabbling for power was not his style, he was the kind of person who could give up anything. He preferred his peace to the rush of the outside world. His seemingly perfect world was being plundered by an intruder.
"Okay…" he mumbled.
Chamberlain chuckled, "I"m your boss now, you might want to accord me more respect."
Clenching his hands, he boomed, "Yes sir!"
He can only endure now. Even if he did not like them, he could not afford to fight against them openly. He did not have enough resources to do that. Besides, he could not afford to gamble with a life, especially Kims".
"You learn fast, huh?" Chamberlain asked rhetorically.
"I"ll see you on Monday, "Carl". You should go back up, don"t keep the lady waiting." He advised.
…
Returning to the apartment, Carl walked absentmindedly to the room, ignoring Kim.
"Hey! Let"s keep playing." Kim suggested, following after him. But he slammed the door on her face, startling her.
Carl took out his phone to text Allen.
[Is the house ready?]
He was yet to hear from him. Seeing Chamberlain had come to look for him, the urgency to move, increased by a fold. He could not let her live her. The living conditions were already bad, added to the danger the Stans are.
[Yes. I picked this.] Replied Allan.
