"Ding dong ding dong," the doorbell interrupted the couple cuddling on the couch. They both raised their heads to look at the door."Are you expecting any one?"
Kim shook her head then asked, "You?"
"No."
Carl pecked her on the lips before getting up. He strode to the door leisurely. He could see the people outside through the intercom. He frowned.
He could see two policemen standing side by side. "What could they possibly want?"
He opened the door, "How may I help you?"
"Carl Mike? Or should I say Stallone Blackwood?" The first policeman questioned with derision.
The lines on his forehead etched in. "Yes?"
The first policeman raised the warrant to Carl"s face, then he smirked, "You"re under arrest for laundering."
Carl was flabbergasted, "What?!"
Just then, Kim got up, she walked to the door barefooted. "Who"s that?"
She saw the policemen before Carl could answer her question.
Sensing Carl"s emotions, she gripped his arm, "What"s wrong?"
Carl was frozen to the spot after he saw the warrant.
The policeman recounted what he had said earlier before turning to Carl, "You"ll have to come with us for questioning."
Kim"s eyes watered but she took a deep breath to calm herself but her clammy hands betrayed her.
"Sure, I"ll go along with you. Let me grab a jacket." Kim patted Carl on his arm waking him up before running upstairs.
In less than three minutes she was back, wearing a pair of sneakers and a trench coat and a shoulder bag while carrying a pair of Converses belonging to Carl. She dropped the shoes on the floor before helping Carl wear them.
Carl watched her every action so he noticed her hands were shaking but she was trying to act calm. He smiled wryly.
"We"re good to go," she sniffled, holding onto his arm.
Though the policemen were surprisingly patient as they escorted the couple to the car parked in the driveway, the first policeman could not hide the disdain he felt whereas the second policeman was unreadable.
The drive to the police station was silent except for the sound of Kim"s breathing. It took everything in her not to let her tears fall. She kept reminding herself that Carl was definitely innocent, therefore everything would be fine.
He was the nicest person she knew. He was patient and he definitely would not do anything to jeopardize their future. After all, he"s only suspected of the crime, he has not been convicted and neither will he.
Carl only patted her hair trying to rea.s.sure her, to rea.s.sure himself too.
As soon as they got to the police station, Kim wouldn"t let go of Carl, she insisted on being together with him.
Carl gave her a warm smile, "I need you to get a lawyer and try not to panic. I know all this is shocking… truly unexpected. And I don"t know the details but everything will be fine."
Kim nodded in understanding. That was all it took for her to calm down. She trusted her husband… he"s honest and upright, so without a doubt, everything will be fine.
After letting go, Carl was escorted into the interrogation room while Kim took out her phone to call Sean.
Actually, she did not think about what had occurred between them. All she wanted was to get Carl out of the police station. And she did not know any good lawyer personally than could be of help.
Luckily she remembered Sean was the heir to a prestigious law firm, surely he would be able to recommend a good lawyer.
She paced back and forth as she waited for Sean to pick up.
"Kim…" his voice floated into her ears.
"Right, Sean, it"s an emergency, I need the services of a lawyer whose focus is on economic crimes." She hurriedly responded.
"Why? What happened?" He gulped.
"I don"t know the details but my husband… he…"
"Kim, calm down and explain."
She rubbed her head, "The police came to the house with a warrant and I don"t know the details… it"s so unexpected so I need a lawyer now."
"Okay. Where are you? I"ll check to see who is available…"
Kim interrupted, "Not who is available, I need a good lawyer… no, an exceptional one."
"I"m currently at the police station, I"ll send you the address. Sean, the cost is not a problem… I need the best. Thank you."
"No need to thank me, I"ll get back to you."
Back at the interrogation room, Carl was seated opposite the two policemen who constantly threw questions at him but he refused to say a word. He was smart enough to know the implication of speaking… it could be used against him.
He just found out it was about work, he was not all that surprised that it"s related to the Stans.
But he never balanced the accounts, he only traded bonds and securities even though he occupied the office of the Chief Financial Officer.
He did not even give financial advice, he only traded in place of the company but somehow he became the one who laundered money.
They kept asking how he was able to afford a house in the upper province, buy a luxurious car and still have so much in his account.
He was previously living in the red district and a few months ago he was only a small time manager, obviously it doesn"t make sense.
Of course it was through his businesses… that no one knew about.
Not to mention there was an additional charge, concealing his ident.i.ty to deceive.
To deceive the company and his immediate boss, wasn"t the boss the one who recruited him?
Actually, his head was aching so bad already. Did these people carry out an actual investigation or were they fooling with him?
"You think keeping quiet will change a thing? You better admit to your crimes!" The first policeman hollered as he banged the desk.
Carl stared at him like he was a clown. He wasn"t going to say a thing. Besides, if they did their investigation right, they would know his team was different from the finance department even though he held the position, he did not really have all the authority. All he did was approved by Chamberlain and the person who"s really in charge of the finance department.
Thinking back, why did Chamberlain even give him that position? Carl ran his fingers through his hair before sighing. This was all because of his boss and friend Chamberlain.
Was he even aware that he was arrested?
Carl was lost in thought, totally ignoring the ranging police officer and his partner who was weirdly unbothered.
