Chapter 58: Only with SpellsTranslator: Nyoi-Bo Studio Editor: Nyoi-Bo Studio
It would be normal for an experienced warrior to use such an attack, but why would a Mage Apprentice choose to attack in such a way?
“I keep feeling that there"s a traitor amongst the mages.” Laker smiled in frustration.
Hort knitted his thick black brows, and not knowing whether to laugh or to cry, he said “I feel that Su Ye has more talent in terms of battle than me. He would achieve more if he trained to be a warrior.”
Laker patted Hort"s shoulders and said, “You don"t need to ask me for help in the future. Su Ye can replace me.”
“Is that so? Su Ye can already compete with you?” Hort was in disbelief.
For the past year, Laker had been Hort"s closest friend. Laker was willing to help Hort, while Hort was willing to ask Laker for help.
“Su Ye sure is lucky. He would have lost if he was facing an intelligent opponent,” Ebert whispered.
Jimmy said angrily, “I think that you are the most intelligent one here. It"s a pity that you are not the one on the field.”
Ebert"s face turned red. He moved his lips but did not make a reb.u.t.tal in the end.
“Stop right there!” A shout came from behind Su Ye.
Su Ye turned around and looked toward Basaro, the third Mage Apprentice from the opposing side.
“It"s now 2:0, what chances do you have of winning?” Su Ye asked calmly.
Basaro was silent for the longest time. He repeatedly deliberated in his heart. With his current standard of magic, it was improbable that he could win against Su Ye. The power and speed Su Ye displayed, as well as his terrifying ability of deduction, made him lose his confidence.
Basaro hesitated for a few seconds but ultimately was too embarra.s.sed to say that the matches just now should not count. Instead, he said, “I want to continue our contest! Only using spells!”
Everyone present heard their words as both Basaro and Su Ye were wearing the mustache voice amplifier.
The arena suddenly fell silent. Basaro wanted to change the rules of the contest.
Niedern did not speak as he noticed the slight expression Su Ye had revealed before he turned around.
Su Ye said, “You guys know that it has only been two days since I advanced to become a Mage Apprentice. I only know one spell, Magic Rope, and the spell is still shaky when I use it. I might even fail to cast it sometimes. Only competing using spells is extremely unfair to me.”
Basaro was silent.
Niedern froze. Why would Su Ye talk about this suddenly? What was his motive? If Su Ye"s spell was described as shaky, then the spells cast by the other Mage Apprentices were even more clumsy than a bear trying to embroider flowers.
“But…” Basaro was extremely indignant.
The reputation of the n.o.ble Academy could be salvaged a little if Su Ye had won with a 2:1 score. But a 2:0 score was a humiliation that the n.o.ble Academy could not bear.
Su Ye"s gaze fell on the ring in Basaro"s hand. He said, “You want to achieve victory for your honor, for the n.o.ble Academy. I can understand why you want to compete only using spells. However, wouldn"t I be thoroughly embarra.s.sed if I lose? Let"s do it this way. Wager the magic ring in your hands, and I"ll compete with you only using spells. The ring belongs to you if you win, but if you lose, the ring becomes my spoils of war. Do you agree?”
“This…” Basaro hesitated. He turned to look at his teacher, then lowered his head to look at his Magic Barrier Ring.
Basaro"s family was not as successful as Andre"s, but he was still equipped with two magic devices after being influenced by the culture of the n.o.ble Academy.
One of the magic devices was this black iron-level magic ring. It held the black iron spell “Magic Barrier.” An ordinary Magic Barrier would form a layer of dark blue magical armor on the surface of the user"s body when activated. That armor could resist multiple attacks from a Black Iron Warrior or the full brunt of a Bronze Warrior"s attack.
The Magic Barrier released by this ring was slightly more powerful.
One of the indispensable steps of creating a powerful magic device was to slice off the Magic Array of a leaf of the Tree of Magic and fuse the magic device with the Magic Array.
After the Magic Array was sliced off, all of the experiences and understanding of the spell would be erased. One would have to carve the Magic Array on the Tree of Magic again should they wish to use this spell in the future. It was akin to relearning the spell.
This magic ring was crafted because a powerful Gold Mage urgently needed the money.
An ordinary black iron magic device cost about 500 Gold Eagles, while this ring cost 800. He would be able to change the ring for an ordinary bronze magic device if he coughed up another 200 Gold Eagles.
Niedern was dumbfounded when he heard the conversation. He had an unbelievable thought. Did Su Ye deliberately create a plan to win the other party"s magic device before he stepped onto the field?
At this moment, the people from the n.o.ble Academy roared.
“Defeat him, Basaro!”
“Are you a coward?”
“You"re only using spells, what are you afraid of?”
“Where"s your pride as a n.o.ble?”
“A sage family is indeed one who cannot attend grand banquets…”
“n.o.ble? Hehe. You can"t afford to lose, yet you don"t dare to win…” Su Ye gently shook his head, then turned to leave.
“You can only use spells!” Basaro suddenly let out an agitated shout. His fists were balled tightly.
Su Ye turned around again and said, “To be fair, we can only use Magic Rope. After all, I only know this spell.”
Basaro thought for a moment and replied, “Fine, but the range of Magic Rope is only ten meters. We have to be ten meters apart. Also, you cannot use any physical attacks. You cannot approach me. We can only battle using spells!”
Basaro had a cautious look in his eyes.
Su Ye thought for a moment and said, “What you mean is that we will stand ten meters apart and can only attack each other with Magic Rope and no other method of obtaining victory, right? Then how are we going to determine the victor? Either one party admits defeat, or when one party depletes their Magic Power?”
Basaro had a glimmer in his eyes as he said, “That"s right!”
Someone shouted from the camp of the Plato Academy, “That"s not fair, Basaro definitely has more Magic Power!”
“I agree! Then, will the teachers from both parties bear witness,” Su Ye said.
Then, Niedern and another Gold Mage from the n.o.ble Academy stepped forward and created a contract. They got the two contestants to sign their names and took out Basaro"s magic ring.
The two teachers walked far away after they completed their tasks.
The sun was setting in the west, and the sky was a dark crimson.
Su Ye and Basaro looked at each other.
“For the glory of the n.o.ble Academy!” a n.o.ble student suddenly roared furiously.
“For the n.o.ble Academy!”
Many other students from the n.o.ble Academy lent Basaro their authority. Their emotions had all been brought up.
The score of 2:0 was too harsh on the eyes, so harsh that everyone remembered the terrifying accolades of the Four Elites of the Plato Academy.
They did not wish to be obscured by the shadows of the Plato Academy once again.
The two contestants approached each other slowly. Su Ye said sincerely, “Your name is Basaro, right? You are an opponent that"s worthy of respect. You wagered your magic ring and reputation for the glory of the n.o.ble Academy. This is worth learning, no matter if you win or lose. I believe that everyone will hold you in the highest honor even if you were to lose all your worldly possessions today.”
Basaro noted that there was no sarcasm in Su Ye"s words. Furthermore, Su Ye had expressed his respect toward the victors just now. He nodded and replied, “Even though you have too many devious schemes, I can"t really blame you. We can only blame Niedern for scamming you into battle. You were forced by the circ.u.mstances. How you obtained victory not only relied on your body but also your intelligence. That makes you a pa.s.sable Athenian. Only the foolish Spartans would rely fully on their bodies. Don"t worry, I will not humiliate you even if you lose. Furthermore, you are already regarded as the victor of this contest.”
