"Milady! Milady! It"s terrible! The young master, he... he…"An old servant barged into the room of Merab Zefer"s official wife, with an unsightly expression on his face. Tears were streaming down his cheeks, and entire body was shaking uncontrollably.
"Matthew, you look terrible. What happened to my Fabin?"
Kesha Amnon, more commonly called Lady Kesha, frowned. This old servant was one who had came with her from her Amnon family when she married into the Zefer family, to take care of her daily needs. To prevent any misunderstandings, he even went through the same procedure necessary to become a eunuch in order to follow her. His loyalty to her is absolute, so she wouldn"t get mad at him for suddenly barging into her room without knocking. But as this is the first time that this has happened, it caused her to feel an ominous premonition.
"The young master, he died!" The old servant cried.
…
In the Zefer family mansion"s ancestral hall, Lady Kesha was bent over a coffin, crying nonstop. The make-up on her face had already started to run, causing her face to look colorfully hideous. The smell of vomit was dispersing in the air.
"I"m sorry, Milady. By the time I got there, it was already too late…"
When Lady Kesha had opened the coffin earlier, still disbelieving of the fact that her only son, her beloved only son, was killed by an 11 year old brat, what she met was a mess of flesh and organs, causing her to immediately throw up.
After unloading everything out of her stomach, she forced herself to look back into the coffin.
After a long enough look, her heart fill with dread, and her world turned black. She fainted. No one else would be able to recognize that mess of a corpse, but how would the victim"s own mother not recognize it?
Seeing his master faint, the old servant immediately turned worried, and went to shake her shoulders until she regained consciousness, whereupon she threw herself at the coffin and began bawling.
After she finished bawling, with a hideous expression and a vicious tone, she cried out for her son"s revenge.
"Where is that little devil! I want to see his corpse by my son"s! Where is Milord? He has to grant my son justice!"
"Mi… Milady. Milord already…" The old servant hesitated.
"Hahaha… Milord has already avenged my son? Then where is the devil"s corpse?"
Lady Kesha looked around the ancestral hall, scanning it with her reddened eyes.
"Did he anger Milord so much that he wouldn"t even put his corpse in the ancestral hall? ha... haha..." Lady Kesha laughed, the pressure on her heart slightly decreasing.
Her Fabin was her husband"s most favored son, who should be more important than any of the other "sons". Rather than "sons", aren"t those others just little b.a.s.t.a.r.ds?
Naturally, if one of them raises their hand against her son, then that hand should be chopped off. If they killed him, then they should immediately die!
But her old servant"s answer would shock her.
"Milord didn"t do anything. He didn"t punish third young mas… that devil, Seth. On the contrary, he declared him his official heir!"
"What!?"
…
If anyone truly understood how merciless the personality of the lord of the Zefer family is, they would know that his decision wasn"t surprising at all.
In a world where strength is power, in a time of strife and conflicts, stronger descendants are valued more than weaker ones. Sons are valued more than daughters, and the strongest son is valued the most.
That applies to all the great families in Haradur city, not just the Zefer family.
Back then, when Merab Zefer found out that among his offspring is an 11 year old boy that can kill an 19 year old martial artist with his bare hands, how did he feel?
Fabin wasn"t weak. Instead, his cultivation was approaching the peak of the lesser mortal stage, the stage of unforgiving mortality. He was just two steps away from breaking through to the greater mortal stage, the stage of heroic bearings.
Even if he suffered a sneak attack that stole one of his legs, with his cultivation level, his remaining combat ability should have been enough to easily take down the average soldier dumb enough to get close to him.
But according to eye-witness reports, he was finished off without being able to put up any resistance. How could that have happened if not for the a.s.sailant"s greater combat ability?
If it was anyone else, and not one of his own sons that was the culprit, Merab Zefer would go mad.
But seeing such a great talent, such a shining gem, appear among his own offspring, caused him to forget about his eldest son in an instant.
As for something as sinful as Seth"s killing of his own blood brother?
In order to inherit the Zefer family, to take the name "Lord Zefer", Mareb Zefer had killed almost every single one of his seven brothers!
If Seth had the same amount of talent as any of his brothers, and did such a thing, then Merab Zefer would severely punish him. Maybe he would even break every bone in the child"s body.
But the reality is different.
Seth"s talent is far greater than any that ever appeared in the Zefer family"s history. How could he possibly bring himself to hurt this gem in his hands?
Looking at such a gem, Merab Zefer, felt the closest thing a man like him could ever feel, to the cherishing a normal father would have towards his son. It was an appreciation, and expectation!
After the incident, he checked Seth"s cultivation level by having a short spar with him.
He found, much to his surprise, that his third son has already reached the first level of the heroic bearings stage!
This was the stage that in the far gone ancient past, when cultivation techniques had yet to circulate throughout the world, and elixirs that could forcefully lift a person up through the levels of each stage by improving the quality of their body, have yet to be created, made one qualified to be a general of an army, a leader of a revolution, a force that could affect a country"s history.
Merab Zefer didn"t remember giving this third son of his any of those elixirs, because this third son of his had never shown off his own abilities in front of him. All he had given him was the Zefer family"s cultivation technique.
That means that Seth had reached this stage that all the strongest of Haradur city are at, all on his own hard work and talent. And this was at the mere age of 11!
Such a talent, even in the great immortal cities, would be highly treasured, not to mention in a small city like Haradur city.
The cultivation techniques of this world do not cause the cultivator"s body muscles to greatly expand, but instead cause the quality of the muscles themselves to increase. The quality of these refined muscles can only be checked when a physical attack is thrown. Thus, it was normal for Merab Zefer to not notice that his third son"s cultivation has reached the first level of the heroic bearings stage if the kid says nothing.
However, he didn"t blame Seth. This third son of his was not one which he paid much attention to. Why?
It was because he was so very satisfied with that first son of his. In that case, why should he pay much heed to the back-ups? They are only there for if anything accidental happens to his first son.
Now… he knew how foolish he was. From now on, he would be sure to pay this third son of his much more attention.
"Son, when did you reach the first level of heroic bearings?"
"Responding to father, this son reached the first level of this stage only a month ago."
"A month ago? Why didn"t you tell me? That means you have been stagnated at the first level for so long? That isn"t good, your father will take some elixirs from the treasury to help you begin organ strengthening and bone tempering. Hahaha, my Zefer family finally has another heroic bearings stage martial artist!"
Merab Zefer was clearly in a good mood. For a cultivator in the heroic bearings stage to be stuck at a level for a month, is not considered long at all. But for this talented son of his, he felt that was long enough.
For the first time in Merab Zefer"s life, he felt the pride of being a father. This new sensation he was feeling, to him, was surprisingly not bad.
Ever since he killed his brothers in their fight to become the family lord, other than himself, there were no other heroic bearings stage martial artists in his Zefer family, causing them to become the weakest of the three ruling families of Haradur City.
Flesh refining, Organ strengthening, Bone tempering
These are the three dimension of the mortals" body refining, each one dependent on the others.
Most cultivation techniques have greater effects towards training the flesh, and much less effect on strengthening the organs or tempering the bones.
However, the organs and bones are the foundations of the flesh. Thus, weak organs, and weak bones, will limit the growth of the flesh. Conversely, strong organs and bones, will speed up the rate at which the flesh can be trained.
Only some extremely rare cultivation techniques are able to train all three dimensions at the same rate, and at the same time. Unfortunately, those types of cultivation techniques aren"t something a mortal city like Haradur city can obtain.
Then how should the cultivators of mortal cities strengthen their organs and bones? How should do so at a rate fast enough to progress through the mortal stages of human cultivation before they pa.s.s their prime and their bodies start weakening?
The answer is elixirs.
Elixirs vary in prices according to their quality, but they can still be bought, unlike the rarer cultivation techniques that were previously mentioned.
Martial artists can use the medicinal effects of elixirs to refine their flesh, to strengthen their organs, or to temper their bones. But the poorer martial artists would never buy elixirs to refine their flesh since they already have cultivation techniques that can do that. Only richer martial artists can splurge on those to speed up their cultivation. Most poorer martial artists only buy elixirs to strengthen their organs or temper their bones.
As the lord of a mortal city, Merab Zefer can only be considered one of the richer among poor martial artists. He too, would only buy elixirs to strengthen organs or to temper the bones.
But it"s not like elixirs don"t have weaknesses.
The more a person takes any one kind of an elixir, the weaker that elixir"s effects would be, putting a limit on the number of levels that any one elixir can help that person break through.
With the elixirs that Merab Zefer can get his hands on around Haradur City, he had already reach as far as he could go on the martial path. That"s part of why he cares so much about having talented heirs. There is a limit to how much he himself can add to the strength of the Zefer family.
But despite how it sounds, elixirs aren"t the only things needed for a martial artist to attain success. A blessed body that can efficiently digest those elixirs" medicinal effects, an effective cultivation technique, diligence in training using that cultivation technique, and an accurate comprehension of the cultivation technique, are also necessary, especially to those whom have less access to resources. Summarily, what are needed to be a successful cultivator are talent and resources!
