War Grounds

Chapter 26

"Eh? Why is she here?" Al was just about to turn around when he suddenly heard his name.

"Al!" It was a sweet voice, one that could open the heavens. It left a majestic sensation similar to the feeling of witnessing the sunlight pierce the gloomy clouds.

Sophia saw him. The girl was an eighteen-year-old beauty wearing a pink headband over her brown short-hair. Her oblong face was alluring.

"I"m doomed." Al wanted to cry.

"Al Gentrix, come here!" The second call belonged to a more familiar person. It"s a deep, probing, and full of terrors, kind of sound.

( T_T ) "Kill me now." Al feinted a smile as he looked back to the location of the voices - his house. He slowly made his way back to the doorsteps. His sweat was cold.

"Sophia, dear. Come and join us for a snack." Marina cordially invited, before sending a "just-you-wait" look to her son.

Al gulped down. Sophia was a transferee, and this was his first-ever interaction with her.

What a bad timing!

Marina ushered Sophia to the living room. "Take a seat first, dear. Just a minute, and I"ll serve you some freshly baked cookies that I had prepared, a few minutes ago. You"re just in time!"

"Thank you, Mrs. Gentrix," Sophia replied with a polite face.

"Al, come and help me prepare the food for your friend here." The tone was calm, but Al knew that trouble was about to come.

"Aye! I-I"ll be back, Sophia." Al stuttered. He immediately raced towards the kitchen area, like his life was dependent on it.

When Al entered the kitchen, he immediately felt the suffocating atmosphere.

"Al Gentrix. What do you think are you doing? When have I ever taught you about making a girl wait? How could you do that to Sophia?" Al"s mother finally exploded, but her tone was somewhat gentle and caring.

Al"s eyes were already half-closed, expecting a beating. However, the scolding he had received seemed to be lighter than what he had antic.i.p.ated.

"Huh? She did not know about my absence?" Al was surprised.

"I-it was my fault, mother. I"m sorry. I had some errands to do with Osho, and I forgot about my schedule with Sophia." He told a half-truth.

"You"re growing old, Al. Get a hold of yourself! Hurry up, and bring these cookies to your cla.s.smate. She"s a lovely dove, kiddo. Don"t make her cry." Marina winked.

"Eh?" Al shrugged off the malicious intent from his mother and quickly left the kitchen.

"Phew...I"m finally safe from mom. Now, how do I deal with Sophia?" Al muttered to himself.

Previously, when he heard about Nisha leaving school, the idea had somehow piqued his interest. When he got a hold of Bloodborne, he was sure that he needs to spend more time in War Grounds. However, Sophia happened.

War Grounds or Sophia?

Al previously said that he knew his priorities. However, when he saw that cute cheeks and heard that lovely voice, his heart was torn.

Sitting on the lofty sofa, Sophia was looking around at the displayed picture frames.

"You have more of your mother"s semblance." Seeing Al holding a large plate of freshly baked cookies with two gla.s.ses of milk on it, Sophia suddenly remarked with a cute smile. It was the mouth-watering aroma that made her look towards Al"s direction.

The boy did not know how to respond. "Why is she so pretty and talkative?" He asked to himself.

Al"s first impression of Sophia was that she"s the shy-type kind of person. But it did not last.

Lo and behold, she"s here right now in his house, blessing him with her beauty, and making him crazy.

He was just there standing, staring at her with enchanted eyes.

Sophia was caught in an awkward situation; her cheeks were red as cherries.

"Uhmmm, did you receive my message?!" Sophia suddenly broke the ice with a forceful tone.

"Uh...message?! Ye-yes! Sorry, I forgot to reply." Al could not think appropriately as he suddenly scratched his head, almost losing the balance of the unsupported plate.

"Woah! Be careful!" Sophia warned.

Phew! He nearly lost his cool. Good thing that he had managed to regain the balance as soon as possible.

"Are you okay?" What a pleasant question, when it comes from the one you adore.

"Uh...yes, thanks. Here grab some cookies. My mother bakes them well." Al placed the plate on top of the crystal table, sitting across his crush. He gulped down a plentiful of the milk in the bottle to boost his confidence.

"Uh...so, why were you absent in school, today?" Sophia"s voice broke another ice. Her tone was gentle, but it was loud.

"No!" Al"s eyes widened.

He immediately transferred seats, lunging towards Sophia. It was scary to look at.

"Shhhh!" Al hurriedly gestured a hush, his right index finger deeply pressed on Sophia"s supple and pink lips. It was an awkward scene to describe.

"Kids, anything wrong?" Marina"s voice echoed from the kitchen area.

"Nothing, mom! Sophia said that the cookies taste great!" Al immediately responded with a shout, quickly retracting his finger. His face was so red it was boiling.

Sophia"s expression was somber.

"Sorry! I don"t mean to...," He ran out of words. His breath was racing fast. "I-I"m currently trapped in a complicated situation! Please forgive me for my behavior!" He bowed multiple times, his face riddled with shame. "s.h.i.+t! Al! Get a hold of yourself!"

"By the way, have you mentioned anything to mom, about my absence?" At the threat of death, Al lost all his insecurities; he finally managed to redirect the topic to his immediate concern. He was speaking properly now.

"Not yet." Sophia turned her head to the side as she answered. Her arms were folded to her chest; she was mad.

"Not yet? What do you mean by that? Please! My mom should not know about this at all costs! What do you want?" Al begged.

"Hmmm. What did you cut cla.s.s for anyway? Are you taking some illegal drugs, Al?" Sophia"s eyes were that of a judge, perusing the truth from the boy"s gestures.

"What a nosy, girl! How did I end up liking this girl?" Al was helpless. "War Grounds."

"What? Are you serious?" Sophia could not believe him.

"Hey! I know that face! Trust me. I"m not an addict...Fine, let"s say I"m a bit attached to War Grounds. It"s just that my mom threw away my Battle Station, and I really need to log in today!" Al defended his case.

"Stop being defensive. What"s your IGN?" Sophia dismissed the previous issue, her face grinning.

"What? Don"t tell me that you"re playing too?" Al"s eyes suddenly lit up.

Sophia"s brows raised, gesturing a "yes."

"Noooo way! My IGN is Udil, I"m a Human...", Al suddenly remembered that his cla.s.s was a hidden one.

"Human Race? Too bad, we"re natural enemies!" Fortunately, Sophia cut him short.

"Woah! What did you choose, then?" Now, this girl has really won his heart.

"Undead."

"Woah! And your IGN...?"

"Gerd."

"WHAAAAAAT!?" Al could not believe it.
