Chapter 6-2
Eventually, Mary and Patrick were engaged as expected.
The news spread like wildfire, for two days of weekend and the day after, it easily emerged as the hottest topic in Karelia School post-holiday.
Thanks to it from morning Mary was welcomed by infernos of jealousy and on lunch break she started to grudge her father as the root of all evils. On the contrary, she wanted to praise game Mary who could still prate her engagement in this kind of circ.u.mstance.
Her quandary was indeed that severe. From morning she was flocked with incessant queries.
Given the hegemony of both houses it’s natural to congratulate them, and she understood how people were submerged within celebration mood for the unification of two equivalent houses.
However even she understood the reason, there’s a limit to her patience.
In particular, taking account from this oddball of a n.o.ble’s daughter’s perspective, to be singled by her coequals, this situation was exceedingly punitive for her.
Nonetheless, somehow she succeeded smoothing things up until after-school.
How many people she has lost count…. She couldn’t afford to fail while being congratulated in front of many eyes; among words of congratulation someone told her that Patrick wished to meet her.
“Patrick-sama called me?”
“Yes, he insisted that he needed to talk to you.”
“I see, thank you for telling me.”
“No, congratulation on your engagement”
Bowing her head, the female student left.
Seeing her back Mary heaved a sigh and rose amidst the human cl.u.s.ter to disperse them.
As school ended and only few students presented, nevertheless whilst Mary was walking on the corridor, congratulation words were still hove on her hither and thither from pa.s.sersby.
Of course, Addie accompanied her beside. Actually, a va.s.sal ought to walk behind his master yet Mary had complained ‘Try for once rotating your head again and again to talk with someone higher than you. You’ll suffer a muscle pain.’, and so now it’s a custom for him to walk alongside her.
“Well then, how he’s going to break things up.”
Mary chirped happily. Puzzled by her words, Addie took a peek on her face.
“Breaking things up, are you perhaps referring to that matter?”
“Considering the occasion, I alleged so. I’ve seen game Mary was dumped brutally; well-well I wonder what would be the case with me?”
Mary giggled and plastered an ecstatic mien. Was astounded, Addie sighed.
Dora-gaku Patrick detested Lady Mary from the bottom of his heart.
A domineering egoistical girl who soon threw a tantrum when her wishes weren’t fulfilled, and extremely quick to bring her parents name to threaten her nemeses. Toward, as defined such ‘abominable lady’, Mary, even prideful as he was to commensurate with someone like ‘that’ Patrick’s efforts must worth a big round of applause.
Since two Houses were in an agreements Patrick stomached it and stayed with Mary, although after the forceful engagement he finally reacted.
Hitherto he withheld himself for his parent’s sake, but following his encounter with Alicia, he at last found his truly precious one and the place he should be.
It was perchance an upshot of his accrued irritations all this time, Patrick’s a.s.sertiveness subsequent to the announcement of their engagement was ferocious; many players were flabbergasted when Mary obnoxiously harangued the heroine.
——Because the game didn’t depict it explicitly their imaginations could go overboard, ‘Really, what’s happened that she became this livid?’ This kind of deliberations continued for some time. ——
“It’s all your fault!” “Even though, you’re just a commoner!” Repeating those phrases,Mary abused the heroine who was ignorant about the whole matter.
Though Patrick who had tracked them rebuked her back, the gaze he casted on Marywas acutely arctic.
Patrick rejection to villainous lady Mary was that ruthless.
And now, Mary was heading to receive such treatment.
“However, to be rejected by a man you don’t even like, this is a quite hilarious story.”
“Ojou…..you seemed to be unconcerned.”
“Well, I pretty much have known what curses he’d hollered at me so…”
Knowing she’d be rejected an aloof smile floated on Mary’s face. Addie slightly narrowed his eyes…..and stopped in his tracks.
Following him Mary halted her steps and looked at him, “What’s the matter?”
“Perhaps, Alicia-chan will resign by her own will.”
Addie murmured and Mary tilted her head.
She a.s.sumed ‘resign’ meant that Alicia will give up on Patrick.
Howbeit she couldn’t come up with any reason for it, believing it was ludicrous Mary shook her head.
One could tell those two loved each other. Plus, the person who essentially should have disapproved their relationship had no initiative to do it.
“No way, in the game even they’re censured they preserved their relationship, you know? Alicia has nil cause to withdraw.”
“Those two came from different social backgrounds, aren’t they?”
“Nonetheless Patrick doesn’t mind it, right?”
The Patrick Mary knew, no matter how ant.i.thetic their statuses are or even if countless hurdles hampering his way ─ notwithstanding it’s Alicia herself ─ he won’t buckle under.
At first glimpse, he might look cool but deep inside he’s more pa.s.sionate than anyone, once he wanted something, he’d do anything and pulled the efforts to achieve it as he was such an acquisitive man.
Their different upbringings posed no problems. If it’s necessary he’d overturn everything, Patrick had the capabilities and skills for it.
Receiving those enlightenments, Addie bearing was somehow still clouded in gloom “Nevertheless……” he whispered.
“I still think Alicia-chan will retreat by her own will.”
“Not anyone else, but for Patrick’s sake you meant? Then there won’t be any problem.”
“Even so!”
As Addie abruptly raised his timbre, Mary gaped in astonishment.
“Even so I think she’ll ultimately back down. Albeit she likes him, withal she loves him from the innermost part of her soul, until she self-deprives herself to the point of lowering her own worth. If it’s like that, isn’t it easier to pull back and let someone else within the same realm, fortune and house to be with him, so she can give a blessing for him to have a happy life……….”
And then, after Addie finished complaining his figure appeared to have shrunk. On his last sentence…’so she can give a blessing for him to have a happy life’ these words ostensibly were a little soliloquy he spelled unbidden.
“Addie, what’s wrong……..”
“No, this…….is my friend………..yes, my friend fell in love with someone with a different status, so…….”
Addie clarified things in a fl.u.s.ter. Subsequently Mary inquisitively stared at him.
For him who treated his master boorishly ─ to the point of bothersome ─ honestly, this was so not like Addie. Wanting to escape from her scrutiny, “I’ll go buy a drink.” He uttered and went to their reverse direction.
Mary who was left behind, watched his leaving back frozen, finally till she suppressed her hammering heartbeat and it calmed down, she spoke
“I-I’m surprised……….”
With all her might
