Meng Jiao ran back to her apartment after meeting Sun Feiyan. Throwing her clothes at her luggage, she rummaged through her drawers, taking the important doc.u.ments and extra cash on her keep. She had to disappear tonight before Shen Yi could manage to get a hand on her.

d.a.m.n Lu Xinyi for ruining her plans. If she died back then, her disappearance would solve everyone’s problem. However, she knew by now that the Sun family would easily throw her under the bus if the situation wasn’t favorable to them.

Meng Jiao made a short letter to her parents, explaining her plans to take a short vacation somewhere just as Sun Feiyan had told her. After making sure that everything was settled, she pulled out a coat from her closet and tied her long hair into a bun.

She dragged her luggage outside, surprised that it had started raining even before she could reach the train station. Biting her lower lip, Meng Jiao was left with no choice but to take a walk under this unfavorable weather.

When she reached the heart of the city, workers from different professions filled the street as they made way home while the other chose to hang out first. Meng Jiao suddenly felt like she was out of place. Everyone was living their life, and yet, here she was, throwing everything behind her back and running away so she could save her life from the devil.

In the middle of the crowd, she felt someone’s eyes set on her. With every move and turn she did, this pair of eyes followed. Her heart was filled once again with terror. Panic had stricken her, her mind racing if it was Shen Yi’s people or from the Sun family’s.

Meng Jiao ran, forcing herself against the wave of the crowd on her way. She pushed everyone, forcing to make a distance between her and her pursuer. At this time, she couldn’t help the tears that fell from her eyes.

Who wanted her life? Why wouldn’t they leave her be?

She had no plans to be involved with Sun family’s matters anymore, much more to compete with Lu Xinyi. Hadn’t the humiliation she suffered today not enough?

Between Shen Yi and the Sun family, which one who would deal with her like this?

Meng Jiao stumbled forward but was able to balance herself and turned to her right, pus.h.i.+ng through the crowd so she could board the train ASAP. However, just as she reached the crosswalk, the traffic light turned green, stopping everyone to cross the street.

At that critical moment, Meng Jiao felt that she didn’t lose her pursuer at all. Instead, it drew closer, frightening her down to her core. She needed to go; whoever it was, it was better not to be caught alive!

The green light hadn’t changed yet, but Meng Jiao jumped towards the crossing cars, which was followed by the screams from the crowd. Her body was. .h.i.t with an incoming car at full speed. The impact had made a dent on the car while Meng Jiao’s body was thrown to a distance, rolling on the ground several times until her head hit the gutter on the road.

Laying on her back, Meng Jiao coughed once; and blood came out from her mouth. Her eyes looked heavenward, seeing the dark sky above, raindrops falling down her face. She realized then how wrong she was.

If she hadn’t coveted what Lu Xinyi had, would this happen to her?

The light on her eyes slowly faded into nothing. On one rainy night, Meng Jiao left the world of the living.

“She’s dead.”

Ye Xingjie found Sun Feiyan sitting at the couch in the living room of her dark suite, drinking wine again. All the lights were turned off as it was almost time for bedtime. The scent of alcohol reached his nose, but his face never made a reaction. Sun Feiyan brought down her wine gla.s.s and sighed.

“Are you certain?” Sun Feiyan threw back his question earlier.

“Yes, she threw herself to the incoming car on the road and killed herself. She was dead on arrival at the hospital when she was brought there,” Ye Xingjie a.s.sured that Meng Jiao wouldn’t have the chance to survive tonight. She’d caused enough trouble already for Sun Feiyan. If they allow her to escape, who knew what she’d do next?

“And the police?”

“They deemed it a suicide. Even if they investigated, they would never find the cause of her accident.”

“Good, good.” Sun Feiyan stood and walked towards him, but she stumbled on her feet and fell forward. Ye Xingjie easily caught her body and steadied her, wrapping an arm around her waist to keep her standing.

“You’re drunk. You better retire for the night,” he suggested.

Sun Feiyan lifted her head and held his upper arm.

“Do you hate me now?” she asked, but Ye Xingjie kept his silence, only the tightening of the jaw was his reaction. His handsome face was still the same when she first met him, only now that his coldness had made her heart ache.

Sun Feiyan leaned forward to kiss his cheek, but he turned away, not giving her a chance to be intimate. She chuckled, knowing well what was on his mind.

“It’s not like the first time you killed someone,” she taunted, “but it was the first time I asked you to do so. Do you want to know why I have to dispose of her?”

“I wouldn’t dare to a.s.sume, Miss Feiyan,” he replied.

Hurt flashed on Sun Feiyan’s eyes, but she easily hid her emotions.

“I’m tired, Ye Xingjie.”

Ye Xingjie waited for her to say more, but Sun Feiyan’s eyes had already drooped to a close. He brought her to the bedroom and laid her on the ma.s.sive bed.

“Then sleep. You need to face everyone tomorrow.”

Sun Feiyan opened her eyes, staring at the man as he draped a blanket on her form.

“But my aunt and Lu Xinyi…”

“I’ll deal with them. Didn’t I promise you I will not allow you to get hurt? Now, sleep.”

Ye Xingjie sat on the chair beside her bed and watched her all night. This wasn’t the life he was expecting to see when he followed Sun Feiyan back home.
